When I decided to specialize in multiple sclerosis (MS), I went way out of my way to find other mind-based practitioners, especially in the fields of hypnotherapy and neurolinguistic programming (NLP), that are getting incredible results with the symptoms of MS and spend as much time as I could with them.
Randal Churchill, Hypnotherapist and Trainer
When I heard that one of Randall Churchill students had become symptom-free of her MS during her training with him, I immediately signed up for his advanced course in hypnotherapy and health. In the course he actually used the session he had with her during her training, as a demonstration of his techniques. He’s known as the ‘trainer of trainers’ in the field of hypnotherapy. He teaches Regression Therapy in the North Bay of San Francisco, California. He shared with us what happened in his demo session with her. Verbatim. He gave us a word for word transcript of what had occurred. In the session, Randall negotiated with the unconscious of the student to not react to the stressors of life by doing MS. He also removed the need to blame herself and to feel she deserved to be sick; two major factors that appeared to be keeping the multiple sclerosis in place. He then worked with her for a few private sessions but he expressed to me that he felt that the demo session had been key in reversing her symptoms.
His view, one that I share and many others I interviewed share, is that the cause of chronic disease and why hypnotherapy was so effective in resolving MS as well as other diseases is that:
“There was a physical issue that was related to an emotional and mental issue and, for that reason, I could work with it.”
In summary, the negotiation style that I learned from Randal helps to transform the subconscious beliefs and mental issues that are causing an overreaction in the immune system. As those beliefs and mental issues are transformed, a powerful physical transformation can take place.
Its been over a decade since Randall has worked with his student. She remains symptom-free of multiple sclerosis.
Melissa Roth, Hypnotherapist and Trainer
I searched all over the internet to find classes in using hypnotherapy and neurolinguistic programming (NLP) to work effectively on autoimmune diseases. I took just about every course I could find. I also reached out to the trainers of the courses I took to find out if they had experience with MS. One such trainer was Melissa Roth.
Melissa’s client had not only become symptom-free but her MRI’s were no longer showing lesions. She explained to me that she used the same 12-sessions protocol as I was learning in her training, “Autoimmune Disease – Taming the Chronic Illness Monster” that she teaches with Roger Moore. The protocol was designed through their experience with clients with autoimmune disease. There were specific session on pain control, insomnia, exercise motivation and nutrition. Other sessions are focused on retraining the body to remove the anxiety factor and any obstacles to success.
Many of the sessions use visual imagery. This was used for cellular healing and light therapy, re-establishing the mechanics of the body, coordinating all parts of the body to work harmoniously together, and toning down the reaction of the body to outer stimulants. They also incorporated NLP processes to change how the body reacts to life and to transform limiting beliefs. One of my favorite sessions she taught us, which I have adapted and use with my clients, she calls “image of Discovery and Release for MS”. The strategy of that session is to understand why the disease is there and what is necessary to transform it. I now combine it with Gestalt therapy and call it directly “Talking to Disease.” Its one of my key sessions. Its gives us all the key issues we need to work on for the rest of our sessions to create lasting change.
When I interviewed Melissa about her client that had become symptoms-free of MS, this is what she said:
“I can’t tell you that I have found a common denominator as to why some people develop MS and others do not. It’s one of those designer diseases–unique for every client. We’ve been virtually 100% successful with MS so far and have high percentages of success (over 80%) with others such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s, etc.
We have not kept hard stats on this therapy like I did with IBS and Fibromyalgia. But, of all the clients I have seen with autoimmune diseases, I’ve not had a single one that did not see at least a 50% improvement in symptoms. Many (and especially with MS) become totally symptom free. For example, Karen (named changed) had had MS for over 10yrs when I first saw her. She was on disability and suffered progressively worsening symptoms–pain, muscle spasms, paralysis, etc. I saw her for a total of 10 visits (anxiety and proper diet were not an issue with her). She came to her last visit stating that her neurologist had taken her off all her MS meds because there were no lesions left. Not that there were no new lesions. There were no lesions at all. Not everyone has been as dramatic as Karen but all MS clients have done really, really well. For MS I like to combine the hypnotherapy with deep tissue massage. They get the fastest results that way”.
Apart from the hypnotherapy sessions given every other week for a period of six months, she also recommended that her clients be on a vegan diet and do moderate exercise.
Ruediger Dahlke, Trainer and Founder of Transformative Medicine
Dr. Dahlke was getting people diagnosed with MS out of their wheelchairs. I had to learn everything he did to do that.
I discovered Ruediger, author, psychotherapist and medical doctor, through an article a friend cut out for me from the magazine “The Optimist”. The article was titled “The Power of Illness”. What was compelling about the article was the statement:
“We really have fantastic results. That includes patients becoming healthy again who had no chance from the viewpoint of mainstream medicine….I have seen multiple sclerosis patients who were in wheelchairs and can now walk again.”
Also he is not a formal hypnotherapist nor NLP practitioner. Once I interviewed both him as well as one of the therapist’s at his center in Australia, I realized that, though he doesn’t call his method hypnotherapy; its a form of hypnotherapy. In my field we call his main method ‘regression therapy’. Regression therapy is an excellent and more interactive form of hypnosis. It can be used to regress to the initial event that caused the issue or disease, to find any inner obstacles that is keeping the disease in place and to be able to work on the cause of healing of each symptom individually.
I eventually studied under him for 9 months. One of Dr. Dahlke’s philosophies for treating chronic disease is that it is related to our psyches and our life style. He believes that any illness offers us a chance to heal our souls. Disease is not the problem; it is actually pointing to the solution.
“A disease presents a task, and when we perform the task, we heal the body”.
His treatment protocol includes deep trance sessions, 20 for multiple sclerosis, along with self-hypnosis, mandala drawing, journaling, and a vegan diet. He also recommends using Homeopathic medicine, acupressure and/or massage. Exercise is not stressed in his therapy.
In the case of multiple sclerosis, Dahlke stated that his center achieves 50% improvement in symptoms through his modality and, in several cases, patients have gotten out of their wheelchairs.
The trance sessions include working with ‘shadows’, parts of yourself you’ve disowned or avoid, finding unhealthy mental patterns that govern your life, and creating a life that fits better with your inner desires and soul.
Paula Marie Jackson, self-healed from MS
Paula used self-hypnosis and guided imagery to reverse her MS. I was lead to her by a teacher of Regression Therapy training I was taking in San Diego. I had my first meeting with Paula during my lunch break the second day of my training. I wanted to learn everything she had done to reverse her symptoms. We continued to stay in touch after my training and I’ve even become one of her first students of her “Healing Light Guided Imagery” (HLGI) protocol she uses with clients of MS and other chronic diseases.
Paula’s healing journey began with an intensive orthomolecular treatment (treating with supplements) to balance her compromised immune system. She then moved from a highly stressful high-pressure business and home environment to a small cabin near the sea to give herself the time and the surroundings for her body to heal.
The orthomolecular treatment had given her more strength but she still found herself bedridden. She used that time in bed to practice self-hypnosis and to meditate. She found what worked best for her was self-guided imagery. She did not use prerecorded meditations but guided herself into her body and into her immune system. She attributes reversing her MS to her powerful visualizations. An MRI done years later showed no trace of the active areas that showed up in the original MRI when she was first diagnosed. When she is stressed, she can feel the fatigue and the stiffness coming on but she knows if she takes the time to rest and visualize she can manage the symptoms quite well.
From her experience, she designed “Healing Light Guided Imagery” (HLGI). Her healing imagery includes a powerful visualization of light therapy and activating the commander cells in the body to restore the immune system.
Earl Corless and Sharalee Clawson, NLP for Health Practitioners
Sharalee has been free of her symptoms for over 20 years. Earl was her practitioner. I got the chance to interview and learn from both of their experiences. As with Paula, I didn’t personally find Earl and Sharalee. One of my teachers of my training in NLP for Health, Kris Halbom of , told me about these two after hearing about my interest in healing MS.
Earl was in one of their first trainings of NLP for Health. Sharalee took the training a few years later. Kris described how she witnessed the transformation of Sharalee’s MS symptoms, her issues with balance, stiffness and speaking, until it was no longer apparent she had struggled with MS.
When I interviewed Earl and asked what prompted him to work with Sharalee’s MS, he explained that he was so amazed at how effective the NLP Allergy Process was on allergies, that he questioned if we could be just as successful with other autoimmune disorders. I knew exactly how he felt. The results of NLP with allergies continues to amaze me today.
Sharalee was Earl’s neighbor. He asked if she might be interested in exploring what NLP could do for her MS. They had no agenda. All Earl knew was that something had to be there that was causing the immune systems to react to myeline as if ‘allergic’ to it.
Sharalee worked with Earl and then decided to get formal training in NLP to continue to learn about her mind and its effects on the body. It was a long process but a very successful one.
I interviewed both of them extensively. The general concept that governs their work together was:
“Unhealthy mental patterns and internal conflicts were being expressed in the body as physical disease.”
In my interview with Sharalee, she commented that she can occasionally get an inkling of a symptom. If that happens, she stops and listens to her body. Her symptoms are communications to her that she’s forgotten herself, pushed herself outside of her desires, closed off her emotions, etc. Symptoms are no longer an indication that she’s sick or that something is wrong or broken. Once she makes the necessary changes to her behavior and thoughts, she becomes symptom-free of multiple sclerosis once again.
What I learned from them was to stop looking for an MS cure. The body will always have the capacity ‘to MS’, in the same way as our bodies have the capacity ‘to catch a cold’ or ‘get an ache’ when we do too much. What we seek is to become symptom-free of multiple sclerosis. Symptom-free means that the body, mind and soul are working optimally.
They’ve recollected their journey, both as a practitioner and a client, in their incredible book on multiple sclerosis, “And Then a Miracle Happens”.
Dr. Joaquin Dulce, Neurosurgeon and Guided Visualization trainer
Dr. Dulce had a client that, through his guided imagery, got out of her wheelchair. He is a sweet retired neurosurgeon in Columbia.
He was one of my teachers in my medical hypnotherapy training at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America in New Mexico. Dr. Dulcey taught us about the use of visualization to help clients heal their bodies. As I did with everyone I trained under, I reached out to him personally and asked him if he had ever worked with MS. To my joy, he had!
He told me of his work with a patient diagnosed with MS. He had used a meditation on light and regeneration. He used a two-part guided visualization. The first part described clearing the body of regrets, guilt, trauma and negative thoughts using a light-cleansing visualization. The second part described connecting to divinity and letting go of the old body to receive a new younger body with its original blueprint without the disease. The patient was required to listen to a recording of this meditation several times a day for several months. He gave me permission to translate and use his two part meditation.
Dr. Dulcey commented that the patient did have one exacerbation due to a traumatic incident in her life after working with him but that she became symptom-free again after an additional session. That tells me that this meditation on clearing old beliefs and starting anew is very powerful. It also reminds me that we must do additional work to help client’s cope with life’s stressors if we want to create lasting change and avoid future exacerbations.
Palmer Kippola, Reversed her MS
Palmer Kippola suffered for 26 years of MS before she was able to successfully reverse it. She never believed there was “nothing that she could do” when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She did more than a dozen experiments with various diets, supplements, detoxing, stress reduction techniques, and gut healing until she succeeded. She has been symptom-free of multiple sclerosis for over seven years.
I met Palmer Kippola through a friend we have in common. She works in the South Bay of San Francisco and coaches people diagnosed with autoimmune disease how to reverse their disease. She has formal training as a functional medicine health coach. I partner with her in my “Creating Health” series that you can find on this website. Together, we help those diagnosed with MS to cover all the factors in creating their health and reversing their symptoms – the bio and physical factors, her speciality, such as toxins and leaky gut, and the psycho-social factors, my specialty, such as anxiety, suppressed emotions, and self-judgement.
The Volunteers of the MS Research Study, Santa Cruz and Monterrey, California
Additionally to all the wonderful people I mention above, I learned the most through my experience with all the participants of my own research study. I worked with 24 people diagnosed with MS; 15 of which completed 9 months of sessions with me. With them, I tested and designed the most effective protocol to address and eliminate the symptoms of multiple sclerosis by treating the psycho-social stressors behind the onset and progression of the disease. I am so grateful for their patience with me as I applied all I had learned on their symptoms. You can see their personal stories here.
I was able to publish the results of my research study on ResearchGate.net. You can find the paper here. And download a pdf copy of the research paper below:
